Yesterday as we had entered the Sunken Citadel we had discovered a stone door embossed with a dragon, the mouth of which was a key hole. Also when we first met the kobold queen we all noticed that behind her throne on a similarly embossed dragon was a key (also in the dragons mouth). We asked as our favor from her that she let us have the key and she was happy to comply. Many of my companions then wanted (since our contract was complete) to attack her and kill the Dragon. But, I am begging to have second thoughts about that course of action. Sure, nothing would please me to have the dragon dead, but to attack and kill the kobolds would be the first blood shed in this dragons name, and I feel that being a part of that would make me more of an instrument of the Dragon than its true slayer. Dragons spread death wherever they go, but I will not be the tool of this little wyrmling or its parents (where ever they may be).

Certainly letting the beast live is not a desirable option, but perhaps when I earn the reward for returning the gold rings I can return and buy the beast from the kobolds or perhaps trick them into letting me be its custodian long enough to kill it.

Any way we were able to wrench the key out of the embossed dragons mouth and yes it did open the stone door that we hopped it would. Beyond we found nothing but foul magic and the imprisoned remains of a Troll guarded by a little demon. I should point out that I once again had a magnificent shot with my bow and slew the demon with a single arrow to the head. The troll proved to be a nasty beast, but not nearly the fight that I had heard in legends. The newest addition to our party (a barbarian from distant tribes, I can't remember exactly where but we discovered him tied up somewhere and we freed him) slew the troll with a powerful blow that could rend a dragon's head in half.

28th day of Septenepra; White Stag.

We finally exhausted ourselves as we continued our incursion into the goblin's territory. We set up a defensible position and rested. No a hour into our rest did we here outside our room the sound of someone wounding themselves on the caltrops we had left as a defense. We readied ourselves and and opened the door, surprising and quickly killing 2 goblins. A third one got a way and quickly returned with re-enforcements. That battle was much more difficult. Perhaps our fatigue or the pressure of entrusting our lives to near perfect strangers over and over in this dungeon finally got to us. We fought poorly, but wost of all we fought ourselves more than we fought the goblins. We did finally slay the goblins, but not without so bad blood between us. The rest of the night progressed without incident, and the rest did a great deal to soften our moods and put us all back on the same side.

We progressed deeper into the goblin lair, but did not encounter any more goblins. It was as if our path was chosen by the gods, for it had led us directly to our what we sought. Sure enough, hiding under a table and nearly starved to death was a baby white dragon. How on earth these kobolds had actually come into possession of a true dragon I can not imagine. I had every intent of slaying the beast where we had found it, but the rest my companions insisted that we take it captive and return it to the kobolds. A mistake sure to haunt us in the future. No dragon can be trusted, and no evil dragon should be aloud to live. They exist only to spread destruction to the world.

We have briefly discussed returning the dragon to the kobolds as we have agreed, but once we get the information from them that we need, we will then slay the dragon and any kobold that tries to defend it. This is troubling since Meepo has been a good friend and companion.

Continuation

27th day of Septenepra; White Stag.

We decided not to rest but to persevere on. Meepo lead us as far as he could down winding corridors to the lair of the goblins where his “dragon” supposedly had been secreted. Much of the entry to the goblin lair was abandoned, only some more dire rats to deal with. I must say that one of my most impressive shots ever was in slaying the bloated mother of all rats. When we burst into her chamber she hissed at us, but I quickly loosed and arrow and slew her with ease. The rest of my companions made short work of the remaining beasts.

It was in this rat chamber that we found the body of a loan adventurer. He wore a gold ring inscribed with a name that I will never remember. He was not one of the ones we had come looking for, so our quest was no nearer to completion. He was however (one of my companions pointed out) the man the siblings has hired to assist them in their dungeon delve. It is possible they are still alive; the resistance we have encountered has been fairly week. It seems this place is more bark than bite.

In one of the abandoned rooms there was an odd puzzle that we have yet to figure out. On one wall was a fountain the bubbled forth a red liquid that when drank caused one to breathe fire. The opposite wall had a locked iron bound stone door that radiated intense cold. Inscribed on it in Draconic is “Channel good, open the way.” Simply approaching the door leached the warmth from our bones. We have yet to discover a way to pass the door, so we have left it, like the other stone door we could not move. Perhaps we will return and solve the riddle of the door later.

We then explored a side passage and finally discovered where the goblins were. “Hiding; those cowards.” Two rooms in a row had half walls with battlements and that the goblins tried to use for their defense, but our team proved to talented for their primitive minds and we quickly dispatched them with out so much as a wound.

We will most likely get to the bottom of the goblin threat and then return to the kobolds where under their protection we can rest.

Excerpt from the last know writings of Kurloch the Lost Traveler

27th day of Septenepra; White Stag.

We continued our delve deeper into the sunken tower. In the top floor of the citadel we found a secret door that led to a parapet tower that had not been disturbed since the citadel sunk into the earth. Within we found a small chamber with three skeletons, to our horror, they were not completely dead. They rose from their dusty remains and attacked us. Our young team reacted well and we vanquished the living corpses quickly, smashing their dried bones to dust.

Also in the top floor of the citadel we found an odd clue to the towers past. Skewered on a spear on the west wall was a goblin. When we let his limp body fall to the ground we found, carved in deep runes on the wall behind, the name Ashardalon. The ancient texts speak of Ashardalon as great and powerful dragon that, ages past, burnt the land around us. Is it possible that this citadel is his layer? Is it possible that he might still be here, frozen in some kind or torpor? Clues we found later did not bode well for our survival? But foremost on our mind is: “why are there so many dead goblins?” At least we have not had to fight them.

There were two doors that lead out of the tower. One of the doors led to a decrepit room that housed nothing but another rat and a stone door we could not dream of budging. Thanks to the quick shooting of the rogue, the rat was quickly dispatched. It was the corridor behind the North West door that revealed the truth of the sunken citadel. In a large chamber we found a weeping Kobold. The wretched beast was crying because the neighboring goblins had stolen their dragon. The little wretch insisted on leading us to the Kobold leaders: Usedrael. It turns out that Usedrael is willing to help us find the missing brother and sister if we recover the dragon for her clan. We agreed to do this for her, but all of us noticed that her throne was of a rearing dragon motif, much like the lock on stone door we could not budge. Hanging in the mouth of the Dragon behind the throne was an ornate key. Might that key open the stone door?

We agreed to help Usedrael recover the dragon, and she assigned Meepo (the weeping Kobold to lead us). They day is growing long, perhaps we will rest in the chamber where we found Meepo.

Chad to launch new Campaign

Cast of Characters

Karim - Whey - Elf Ranger (Two weapon)
Nicole - Modari Fliesch (Ari) - Gnome Monk
Shiree - Sirillia Emptyfork - Halfling Druid
Jason - Kurloch the Surly - Human Ranger (Archer)
Kyle - Sin'dal Matrim - Half-Elf Beguiler
Stephen - Gaylyn - Elf Rogue

Our heroes began their journey in a small town called Oakhurst, at which point they met a merchant in distress who had lost her brother and sister due to a recent outing to the looming darkness. The "place of no return" is known as The Sunless Citadel" DUM dum DUM!!!! After picking up some background info on the place, and getting offered a rather nice reward of 250 gp if they returned either the brother and sister or their signet rings, back to the rich merchant lady. Our fearless heroes plunged into the depths, only to be assaulted by a rather small band of rats (non-dire in origin if you MUST know) which they succeeded in slaying rather mercilessly, Kurloch taking careful aim and splattering the living bejesus out of one of the rats with a mighty X3 longbow critical, vanquishing one rat in such a fashion that the only thing that remained of him was an evenly spread stain upon the sandy stone. (For a whopping 19 frickin points of damage I might add). Moving forward, our team gets themselves in a bit of a spot as they realized just how much it sucks firing into melee at lvl 1, after Kurloch brashly steps out into the first room and proceeds to fall 10 feet straight down into a rather smelly hole with two dead goblins, and one very much alive and very much hungry rat (yes yes yes this one WAS Dire).
